MINI PAPER FPCI: Did You Know That AUKUS Will Upgrade Indo-Pacific Military Defence?

Did You Know That AUKUS  Will Upgrade Indo-Pacific Military Defence?

Australia steps up its military power alongside its partners, the United Kingdom and the United States, which is known as the "AUKUS" pact, through nuclear-powered submarines. President Biden said that the pact will allow for a bigger sharing of defense capabilities and will help Australia develop nuclear-powered submarines. (Madhani & Lemire, 2021).

Besides its main ticket for submarines, AUKUS will include artificial intelligence, cyber capabilities, as well as other undersea technologies. The project brings Aussie to become the seventh nation to establish such nuclear capabilities after the US, UK, France, China, India, and Russia (BBC News, 2021).

The decision made France furious and then accused President Biden of "back-stabbing" allies due to his unilateral decision. This was also because, in 2016, a French Naval group had already chosen to build the same project, and now it has been handed to the US. A similar response was also drawn by the EU because they were not informed beforehand (France 24, 2021).

The Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson, Zhao Lijian, also joined the club. Zhao said the US and UK's involvement with nuclear-powered submarines was "extremely irresponsible" because their "cold war" strategy would harm their interests. However, Australia’s prime minister, Scott Morrison, had already sent an invitation to President Xi Jinping, and he was ready to talk. As China will keep an eye on Australia, Zhao stated that they should establish a conducive regional peace and stability as well as respecting regional people’s aspirations (Davidson & Blair, 2021).
